Bio-Identical Hormones


No two people are alike. However, all of our hormones deplete as we age. As our hormone levels drop, we begin developing symptoms. 

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy can benefit men and women by preventing osteoporosis, improving the lipid profile, reducing the risk of heart disease, reducing the risk of Alzheimer's, relieving symptoms of menopause and andropause, improving mood and sense of well being, increased mental and physical energy, decreased anger, irritability, sadness, tiredness, nervousness, improved quality of sleep, improved libido and sexual performance, increase in lean body mass, a decline in fat mass and increase in muscle strength. Hormones that could be prescribed are estrogen, progesterone, growth hormone, acth/cortisol, armor thyroid and various testosterones.

The value of bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is that it can be adapted to fit an individual's body and hormone levels. There are many reasons why men and women would choose bio-identical hormones as an alternative to synthetic hormone replacement therapy. The most important reason is that bio-identical hormones are molecularly (bio-chemically) identical to those produced by the body.

Bio-identical hormones differ from synthetic hormones in that synthetics are not identical in either structure or function to the natural hormones they emulate. Because synthetics are not identical to the hormones in the body, they do not attach to receptor sites in the same way that bio-identicals do. Some of the possible unwanted side effects of synthetics may include: breast tenderness, fluid retention, headaches, vaginal bleeding, high blood pressure, leg cramps, etc.

This custom individual therapy begins with the initial consultation where we establish our relationship with realistic goals and boundaries for care. You will have an intake appointment where your medical history report is completed and individual hormone diagnostic tests are ordered.  You are instructed to complete a saliva specimen for a comprehensive hormone test. Your levels of estriol, estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, thyroid and growth hormones are determined by a diagnostic medical laboratory test that measures all of your hormone levels at a specific time of the month. Your results are analyzed by Dr. Dyer-Goode. This information is supplemented by your current medical history report.

Dr. Dyer-Goode will evaluate all personal data and prescribe a custom designed bio-identical hormone replacement treatment. This treatment will contribute to those hormones in your body needing supplementation to provide a natural and healthy hormone balance.

Each patient is then monitored carefully through regular follow-up hormone diagnostic tests to ensure we get symptom relief at the lowest possible dosage. We will do a hormone diagnostic test every three months prior to issuing the next prescription to assure that you are receiving the correct dosage to achieve optimum results.

Testosterone

Testosterone which is produced by the testis and adrenal glands is the master male sex hormone and an anabolic steroid. Testosterone is what makes men, men! As an anabolic steroid it increases protein synthesis in cellsespecially muscles. It is also associated with androgenic properties and their development of secondary sex characteristics in men such as growth of body hair, deepening of voice, increased muscle mass, etc. In healthy men, hormone levels between 300 mg/dL and 1000 mg/dL is considered to be within the normal range. Low T also known as andropause, is testosterone levels below 300 mg/dL. Low levels of testosterone is known as andropause where as low levels of estrogen and progesterone in women is known as menopause. 

As men age the ability to sustain normal levels of this hormone decrease. It is estimated that more than 30 million men in the US suffer from this condition. Once diagnosed it is a medical condition that requires continual treatment for a good quality of life. It is a natural process of aging in men. Symptoms associated with Low T are decreased libido, energy and endurance as well as, decreased enjoyment of daily living, mood changes, insomnia, hypersomnia, erectile dysfunction (ED) and memory lapses. 

Testosterone levels are subject to physical and psychological factors such as cardiovascular problems, depression, diabetes, high cholesterol, recreational drugs, medication etc. By age 40, most men have experienced some type of erectile dysfunction. However, many men start as early as their late twenties. When testosterone decreases and the size of the abdomen increases,the penis undergoes a reduction in size in both length and girth. Testosterone replacement may help with the reversal of this. In addition, men may suffer from coitophobia; a fear of failure to achieve orgasm or even to engage in coitus (intercourse). This can lead to undue anxiety.


Pharmaceutical companies are advertising androgel as a replacement for low testosterone. Androgel is a synthetic testosterone that has been patented by Abbotts Lab under the generic name Testogel. It is C-17 alpha methylated testosterone better known as Methyltestosterone. This synthetic nomenclature denotes a different constructed testosterone molecule from that produced in our bodies. Pharmaceutical companies are not permitted to have patents on natural products. Pharmacological companies want to own the legal rights to the products they produce.


Therefore, they must produce an altered testosterone from what is produced by nature. Alteration of a molecule will cause it to be less effective at the receptor site. It does not fit the receptor as well as the natural product produced by our bodies as seen with a bioidentical hormone. The major difference between testosterones chemical structure and estrogen is a hydroxyl group at the third position and two additional double bonds in the ring structure. Therefore the difference between testosterone and estrogen is a minimal change in the chemical structure. This small change is the difference between a male and female. This is the main reason why you need bioidentical hormone replacement as opposed to synthetic hormones. For example, a minimal change in a hormone can cause drastic side effects. In plain English, do not take synthetic hormones.

Oxytocin aka "The Love Hormone,"

 is produced in the brain by the

posterior pituitary gland. This hormone

is associated with orgasms, social

recognition, pair bonding, etc. It is being

investigated as the hormone that makes

love and relationships possible. It is also

associated with a decrease in food

cravings (Kovacs 1998), sugar cravings 

(Billings, 2008) and stress reduction

(Legros 2003). Oxytocin is also known to increase sexual function (Pedersen C.A. 2002), improve depression (Uvna-Moberg 1999) and to modulate social behavior (Siriga 2012). It may be compounded as nasal spray, troche or sublingual (under the tongue). 


Oxytocin injected into the cerebrospinal fluid in rats caused spontaneous erections (Gimpl and Fahrenhoz 2001)


In humans plasma concentrations of oxytocin have been shown to be higher among people who are in love (Broadfoot 2002).

MDMA (ecstasy) may increase feelings of love, empathy and bonding by activating oxytocin activity (Thompson et al. 2007).

Plasma oxytocin is increased during human sexual arousal in men as well as women it is significantly increased during orgasm and ejaculation according to The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology (METAB 1987 Jan 64 (1):27-31).
